Two zones, two very different water supplies
The City of Mesa splits its service area along the Eastern Canal. West of it, the “City Zone” runs primarily on Salt River Project water from the Salt and Verde Rivers, blended with local groundwater, averaging around 12 grains per gallon (gpg) of hardness. What extra-hard water actually does to a pool
Every gallon of fill or top-off water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium with it. In a pool that loses water to evaporation constantly (which, in East Mesa’s summer heat, is every pool), those minerals concentrate over time. The results show up as:
- Calcium scale: chalky white deposits creeping up the tile line and building up inside plumbing and heaters
- Cloudy water: high calcium saturation scatters light even when sanitizer levels are fine
- Rough, scratchy surfaces: scale texture on plaster or pebble finishes that starts subtle and gets worse each season
- Shortened equipment life: scale buildup inside heaters and pump components makes them work harder and fail sooner

- Test calcium hardness more often. With source water already near 16 gpg before evaporation concentrates it further, East Mesa pools can cross into scale-forming territory faster than the general “check monthly” guidance assumes.
- Watch your fill water, not just pool water. Every top-off adds more hardness. A pool that’s topped off frequently during peak summer evaporation needs closer attention than one that’s rarely refilled.
- Brush the tile line on a schedule, not just when you notice buildup. Scale is far easier to prevent than to remove once it bonds to grout and plaster.
